New Gluten Free Guidelines for South Staffordshire
The South Staffordshire CCGs have been reviewing gluten-free prescribing in the area, particularly as North Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent CCGs restricted the availability to children and adolescents under 18 years back in 2016.
A public engagement exercise was undertaken in early 2020 and the decision to change the South Staffordshire guidance was approved by all CCG Membership Boards and Steering Groups in July 2020.
This was further discussed at the Governing Bodies Meeting in Common on the 30th July 2020 and the following was approved:
- South Staffordshire CCGs will only support NHS prescriptions for gluten free foods to children and adolescents under the age of 18 years and diagnosed with Coeliac Disease, other gluten related enteropathy or dermatitis herpetiformis. Gluten-free products should no longer be prescribed for patients aged 18 years and over. For children and adolescents bread and mixes would be allowed as per Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) guidelines.
- A single Gluten-Free prescribing Policy across the 6 Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent CCGs – Gluten-free foods prescribing policy 2020
The medicines optimisation team will be supporting the implementation through the review of existing prescribing and will be contacting patients affected directly.
The team is currently working to ensure they have the necessary public information available. To minimise the impact on General Practice, any queries relating to these prescribing changes are being directed to the Patient Services Team, who are available Monday-Friday 9am – 4pm, by emailing: MLCSU.PatientServices@nhs.net. If patients are unable to email they can telephone the team on Freephone: 0800 030 4563.
Please be aware the Team are currently working remotely due to the pandemic and it may take longer than usual for them to return telephone calls, patients are requested to be patient and are assured that all enquiries will be responded to.
